Abstract

A finely-divided expandable thermoplastic is produced by polymerization of monomers in fine dispersion in an aqueous medium, a liquid or liquefiable gas expanding agent being added when the final spectrum of polymer particles sizes has been established the addition being completed at the latest when polymerization is 95% complete. Specified monomers are: styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl acetate, N-vinyl carbazole, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylamide. Specified expanding agents which are non-solvents for the polymer are: propane, butane, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, dichlorodifluoromethane and 1 : 2 : 2-trifluoro-1 : 1 : 2-trichloro-ethane. The process may be carried out at 50-100 DEG C. in the presence of 0.2-0.5% of a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide or azoisobutyronitrile. Pressure due to the vapour pressure of the reactants may be applied. Additives may be dyes, plasticizers, flame retardants, e.g. chloroparaffins or brominated oligomers of butadiene, and/or protective colloids. The expanding may be added to the extent of 3-15% of the monomer and may contain a solvent, e.g. methanol or ethanol but one component should have a b.p. below the softening point of the mixture. In Example 1, sodium pyrophosphate, styrene acrylonitrile, n-butyl stearate, benzoyl peroxide and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and methyl acrylate are mixed in water and heated. Pentane is added as expanding agent. In the other examples, (2) the acrylonitrile and n-butyl stearate are omitted, (3) hexabromocyclododecane is added in place of acrylonitrile and n-butyl-stearate and the expanding agent is a pentane/1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoro - 1 : 2 : 2 - trichloroethane mixture, (4) methyl methacrylate is added in place of acrylonitrile and n-butyl stearate and the expanding agent is a pentane/methanol mixture.
