Abstract

1,022,460. Rolling. W. H. LEINBACH. Sept. 21, 1964, No. 38437/64. Heading B3M. Convolutions such as threads or splines are rolled on to a tube using a mandrel and a rotating die, the mandrel having convolutions on its surface complementary to those formed in the tube. The mandrel 11 supports a tube 10 and is formed with a portion 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) of greater diameter with which three rotatable dies initially mesh. The tube 10 and mandrel 11 are rotated by the action of the dies and the tube is deformed progressively as shown, the convolutions in each die 12 increasing in height towards the right. Planetary or flat dies may replace the dies 12.
