A well packer comprises a packing collar 21 sleeved on a packer mandrel 12 between upper and lower slips 28, 14, a tubing mandrel 2 on which the mandrel 12 is slidably sleeved, a passage 25 for applying fluid pressure to project a latch 40 on the mandrel 2 into a keeper formation 33 on the mandrel 12, and mating surfaces 31, 31A on the mandrels for closing the passage to apply the fluid pressure at a limit of relative sliding of the mandrels. The packer is lowered into the well on a tubing string 3 and is set by elevating and rotating the string to bring pins 20 carried by the mandrel 12 into alignment with the vertical leg of J-slots 8 in the mandrel 2, and by lowering the tubing string. The mandrel 12 is held fixed in the well by friction blocks 15 and the string is lowered until mandrel surfaces 38, 32 engage and set the slips 14 and expand the collar, the surfaces 31, 31A also being engaged to cause fluid pressure from the annulus beneath the expanded collar to project the latch and set the slips 28. The packer is released by upward pull on the tubing string with or without reduction of the annulus pressure, the mandrel 12 being lifted by the flared mouths of the vertical limits of the J-slots engaging teeth on a ring 10.
