Abstract
The cores of balls, and particularly golf balls, are impregnated with a polyurethane covering composition. The composition may be formed by reacting suitable polyesters (for example polyethylene glycol adipate), polyethers (e.g. polyglycols obtained from propylene oxide and tetrahydrofuran) or polyesteramides with an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate (e.g. naphthalene diisocyanate, toluene diisocyanate or diphenylmethane diisocyanate). The resultant prepolymer is mixed with a cross-linking agent such as butane diol or an amine, fillers, mineral oils and colouring materials being added to the mixture if desired. In a particular example described, a liquid polyurethane prepolymer obtained from polytetrahydrofuran and toluene-diisocyanate is mixed with titanium dioxide and methylene-bis-(ortho-chloroaniline).ALSO:A ball comprises a cover of a polyurethane composition, and a core having a barrier which is impermeable to liquid polymers at a distance of between 0.2 mm and 3 mm radially inwards of the outer surface of the core. The invention is particularly applicable to a golf ball, and in the preferred method of manufacture, the ball is formed by impregnating the outer surface of the core with a liquid polyurethane precursor, (which may be mixed with fillers mineral oils and colouring materials), and converting the precursor to a cross-linked polyurethane, in which case the barrier serves to limit the degree of penetration of the cover material into the core. As described, the core may comprise either a fluid-filled, paste-filled, or solid centre, wound with layers of rubber thread and rubber tape, and the barrier is formed either by overlapping the edges of the rubber tape in one of said layers, or by dipping the core in a sealing compound at the appropriate stage of its manufacture, suitable sealing compounds being rubber latex, aqueous dispersions of synthetic rubbers, or solutions of synthetic rubbers in solvents which are not deleterious to the rubber windings of the core.
