Abstract

1,176,441. Electrical control of printers. KIENZLE APPARATE G.m.b.H. 18 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 18397/68. Heading G4H. In a typing machine there is a programme mechanism and an associated tabulation control store containing a number of store positions in each of which there is a number to be used for selecting the typing position across the paper, and a number giving instruction as to what is to be typed in that position. The typing position is determined by displacement of the carriage 4 or, in other forms of typewriter, by the displacement of the print head. In either case sliding contacts 6 move over a coding bar 5 to give a group of coded signals 8 representing the typing (or tabulating) position. These signals are compared at 7 with desired position signals 9 coming either directly from the programme mechanism 1 or from the tabulation control store 2. The comparator gives high, equal or low signals on leads 11a, 12 and 11. The signals on leads 11 and 11a move the carriage 4 in the appropriate directions until the actual position agrees with the desired position. The equal signal on lead 12 may then cause the programme mechanism to imitate the printing of the appropriate data in the position set. If the store 2 is being used, the programme mechanism 1 merely selects one of the store positions by a signal 15. The tabulation position is then read out and the carriage moves accordingly. When equality is reached the signal on line 13 allows the corresponding command number to pass to the programme mechanism 1 so that the desired information shall be printed in this position. The next operation may be given by a further command from the programme mechanism to select the next store position. This may be achieved by a repeated instruction to step a given number of positions to find the next position to be read out. The store 2 may be a plug-in unit designed for a particular operation, e.g. book-keeping. It is replaced with another for different operation. It may be a permanent store.
