Latching means for a bonnet or like lid on a vehicle is characterised in that a cross member in the vehicle supports an axle having control and latch members at one end and a bolt at the other whereby a single actuation of the control member first releases the latch member and then the bolt. The said axle 14 is supported in brackets 10, 11, Fig. 8, and has a rotatable bolt 15 at one end which is engagable with a keeper 37, Fig. 6, in the form of a bar supported by the lid 1. In the unlatched position of the bolt 15, a latch member 16 on the other end of axle 14, Fig. 1, is held in the position shown by an over-centre spring 18, to hold the latch closed. When an unlatching handle 33 is pulled, it draws down a spring loaded member 28, pivoted at a fixed point 29, down a slot 25 in a link coupled to member 16 at 24, so that a projection 32 on members 28 is pulled out of a notch 22 in member 16 which is then pulled into the unlatching position of Fig. 2. After release of handle 33 member 28 is impelled to the position of Fig. 4 by the torsion spring mounted about the pivot 29. In the event of the lid being lightly closed the bolt 15 partly engages the keeper 37, and the member 16 is held in an intermediate position, Fig. 3, by the projection 32 engaging notch 21, whereby the spring 18 is held in a dead centre position until such time as the lid is banged completely shut.
