Abstract

1,017,464. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 5, 1962 [Dec. 28, 1961], No. 46383/61. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre is formed by positioning a main layer, comprising portions 3, 5 of different coloured rubber, around a sidewall region of the tyre carcass 1 and a capping layer 7 of darker rubber, preferably neoprene, wholly over the lighter coloured portion 5, after moulding and vulcanizing the tyre, part of the capping layer 7 is removed to expose at least part of the lighter coloured portion 5. The darker portion 3 of the main layer overlaps the edge portion of.the tread 2. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a further layer 8 of neoprene overlaps the radially outer edge of the capping layer 7. A chafer strip 9 may extend from the bead edge of the carcass 1 to overlap the radially inner edge of the white portion 5. In a modification, Fig. 4, the capping layer is superposed on the white portion and the dark rubber of the main layer is applied in two strips 12, 13 disposed on each side of the white portion. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the dark portion of the main layer comprises a strip 14 overlapping the edge of the tread 2, and two parts 15, 16 of neoprene disposed on each side of the white portion, with the capping layer superposed upon both the white and the neoprene portions of the main layer. In a modification, Fig. 7, the neoprene parts 15, 16 are joined to form a single strip 19, the white strip being inserted in a depression 19a in the strip 19.
