Abstract
1,017,354. Light guides. CONTINA BUREAUX-UND RECHENMASCHINENFABRIK A. G. April 24, 1964 [April 27, 1963], No. 17210/64. Heading G2J. Two bundles of optical fibres 11, 12 of different cross-sections are coupled by a transparent body 14 having a reflecting surface 15 of such shape that light impinging therein from one bundle is reflected into the other bundle. As shown, the surface 15 is ellipsoidal having a focal point at F 2 on the axis of fibre bundle 12 in the plane of its end face 13 so that rays of light 17<SP>1</SP>,19<SP>1</SP>, from the focal point F 1 are reflected at 18, 20, along paths 17<SP>11</SP>,19<SP>11</SP> to F 2 . Rays,such as 21 which would be lost if the ellipsoidal surface extended as shown dotted at 22 are retained by having a conical surface 23 which reflects the rays back along path 21<SP>11</SP> to flat face 25 where they are reflected along path 21<SP>111</SP> to the fibre bundle 12. The ellipsoidal surface 15 may be replaced by series of conical surfaces. The external screw thread 29 engages a holding member supporting the fibre bundle 11, Fig. 2, not shown.
