Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A combined pressure and relief valve assembly for water containers such as motor vehicle radiators comprises a cap 15 which carries a pressure relief valve member 26 urged by a spring 25 to a seating 7 in the filler pipe 4 when the cap is mounted thereon and a diaphragm valve 34 carried on the underside of the valve member 26 and having a core or nipple 37 to control an opening 32 in the valve member 26. The valve 34 opens to admit air when the pressure in the container or radiator is reduced. The valve 26 is moulded from a flexible plastics material having a Shore hardness of from 60 to 80. The diaphragm valve is made of a more flexible material and is connected to valve member 26 by sticking, by vulcanization, by its own resilience, or by the provision of a square profiled annular flange inserted in a groove in the valve 26 (Fig. 3, not shown). The cap 15 is moulded on to a metal cover 16. The cap 15 is attached to the filler pipe 4 which is integral with the radiator 1, by means of lugs 17 cooperating with ramps and notches in a dependent flange 14. A flat spring 23 is seated around a central stud 20 and abuts one end of the spring 25. The annular seating 7 borders an opening 2 in the radiator. When the pressure in the radiator reaches a predetermined value the spring 25 is further compressed and steam is emitted between the annular seating 7 and the valve member 26 to an outlet pipe 11 until the pressure inside the radiator falls. If the pressure in the radiator falls below the external pressure then air enters via pipe 11, traverses a slot or slots 33 in the stud 21, pushes out the nipple 37 and enters the radiator via openings 36. The surface of the diaphragm valve 34 exposed to air pressure in the opening 32 and that exposed to steam pressure are substantially equal. In a modification the cap may be secured to a hollow body 8 by turned-down lugs (Fig. 4, not shown) or by a locking rod (Fig. 6, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the cap is secured in a hollow body of plastics material which forms the seating for the flexible facing of the pressure relief valve. The body is screwed into a bush welded to the radiator.
