The ripping machine of the referred to Specification 918,251 is modified so that one or more rotary cutters 19 project forwardly from a gear head 16a that can be traversed along a vertically movable, horizontal beam 15 positioned ahead of and supported on the chassis 10 of the machine. The shaft 17a of each cutter 19 is enclosed by an oscillitable sleeve 24 having laterally extending arms to which a scraper blade 26 is so attached that the blade is only effective to sweep material laterally towards a conveyer extending back through the centre of the machine.
