Abstract
1,014,873. Preparing ethylene/1-olefine/cyclic diene interpolymers. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. June 26, 1962 [Sept. 5, 1961], No. 24440/62. Heading C3P. Ethylene, at least one 1-olefin having the formula CH 2 = CHR, wherein R is a saturated alkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and at least one cyclic diene which is dicyclopentadiene or its exo isomer or methyl cyclopentadiene dimer, are solution polymerized in the presence of a dissolved catalyst formed by reacting vanadium tetrachloride or vanadyl trichloride with a mixture of an alkyl aluminium dihalide of the formula R<SP>1</SP>AlX 2 and a dialkyl aluminium monohalide of the formula R<SP>1</SP> 2 AlX in a weight ratio of R<SP>1</SP>AlX 2 : R<SP>1</SP> 2 AlX between 80: 20 and 20:80 wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a saturated alkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and X is chlorine or bromine, the molar ratio of aluminium to vanadium in the catalyst being greater than 5 to 1, and the catalyst being one that is soluble in a hydrocarbon solvent thereby yielding an interpolymer as defined in Specification 1,014,874.
