A tool for gripping and supporting a pipe in a borehole comprises a frame 1 with an open side and having aligned guides, slides 16, 17 mounted in the guides, jaws 18 carried by the slides, a screw 21 for adjusting one of the slides, and operating means comprising a handle 40 and toggle mechanism 28, 32 connected to the other slide and a fixture. The fixture is a member 15 of the frame and the connection includes a threaded sleeve 36 which permits adjustment of the toggle mechanism.
