Abstract

In the process for producing fibrous graphite from a natural or regenerated cellulose materia by a controlled heating schedule, the product is improved if the heating is performed in a halogen gas containing oxygen-free, non-carbonaceous gaseous atmosphere until the temperature reaches 650 DEG C. when this atmosphere is purged and replaced by an oxygen-free, non-carbonaceous, halogen-free gaseous atmosphere and the heating continued until the temperature reaches 800 DEG C., and thereafter the surface of the material is continuously swept with a halogen-gas containing oxygen-free, non-carbonaceous gas whilst the heating continues up to graphitizing temperature until substantially complete graphitization of the initial material has occurred. The halogen gas is preferably present in an amount of at least 5% by volume of the given atmosphere, and the preferred mixture is 20% by volume chlorine and 80% by volume of nitrogen. The oxygen-free, non-carbonaceous gas may be nitrogen, argon, or helium.
