Abstract

Waste gas from the acidulation of phosphatic ore with alkylation grade sulphuric acid, which contains carbonaceous combustible material and silicon tetrachloride, is passed to a combustion and hydrolysis zone at 800-3000 DEG F., silica is <PICT:1011234/C1/1> removed from the product gas in a cyclone separator above 300 DEG F., and hydrogen fluoride is removed from the remaining gas by absorption in water. Fuel, steam and air are added, as required, to the waste gas to be burnt. The content of oxygen should be only just sufficient to support combustion. As shown, waste gas is mixed successively with air from pipe 22, fuel from pipe 21 and stem from pipe 26 and burnt in a chamber 18.
