A clothes pressing machine has its upper part 1 pressure-operated and connected to a swinging arm 2 whereby it can be swung upwards and pressed downwards on to the lower part 4, 6 of the press which is connected to arm 2 by a movable link 5 and guidable from the pressing position to a loading position. The lower part 4, 6 consists of a receiving table 4 on a carriage 6 which can move along guide rods 8. In Fig. 1, the link is a rigid rod 5 pivoted at one end to the carriage 6, having at the other end a roller 11 which moves in a slot 7 in the arm 2, and also having a roller 9 constrained to move along a fixed curved member 10. As the upper part 1 is brought down, the carriage 6 moves to the right-hand end of the guide rods 8, the roller 9 being against the vertical end edge of the member 10 in the rightmost position. The slot 7 enables the closing of the press to be continued after the rightmost position is reached. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the link is a spring-loaded telescopic arm pivoted to both the carriage 6 and the arm 2. In either embodiment, to reduce the pressure on the guides 8 during pressing, the receiving table 4 may be mounted on a stop-member which can slide vertically in an opening in the carriage 6, downward movement of the table 4 being opposed by a spring and upward movement limited by one or more adjustable stops (e.g. a ring). During pressing the lower end of the stop-member bears against support members. Alternatively, a pressure cylinder can be provided between the stop-member and the support members, being operated in response to movement of the upper part 1. Electromagnetic means may be provided to lift the table 4 after pressing.
