In a machine substantially as described in Specifications 929,841 and 936,020 in which address labels are adhesively secured to enveloper and a label sensing device permits the rejection of labels specially provided with punched perforations, the envelopes are fed beneath a plate TP by driven rollers SR, SCR carried by a resiliently mounted stage S and a label strip is fed over the plate TP by a reciprocating shuttle bar LFB transversely to the direction of feed of the envelopes and underneath a reciprocating punch 509 operating through an aperture in the plate TP to sever a label and apply it to the envelope. To facilitate better adhesion and movement of the envelope during the dwell period of the punch 509, the latter is provided with rollers 511 which engage the label and press it against the envelope. The driven rollers SCR are aligned opposite the rollers 511 whereby in the absence of an envelope on the sensing of a label to be rejected, the rejected label is moved away from the aperture in the plate TP and is carried by further driven rollers which eject it from the machine.
