Abstract

1,079,232. Labelling machines. NEW JERSEY MACHINE CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1963, No. 48478/63. Heading B8P. [Also in Division B6] A device is provided to verify a label before it is applied to an article to ensure that the contents are correctly identified. A label web 10 is mounted on a roll at a station A and is fed by rollers 60, 61, as described in the divisional Specification 1,079,233, past a printing station B, a verification station C and a punching station D. The rollers 60, 61 effect dwell periods in the feed and any reverse feed is controlled by rollers 105, 106 so that the printed label is accurately positioned for severing by a cutting blade and die 120, 121 at a station F before it is engaged by an applicator 172 for application to an article 14. The verification markings are applied at the station B and their disposition is unique for each product label and verification is effected by photo-electric cells acting through masking plates provided with holes in corresponding positions only. Other identifying information may be printed and all such information and markings may be removed during label severing. It may be desirable to supply pre-printed label rolls also provided with identification markings. In a modification, Fig. 19 (not shown), draw rolls (56) feed the web to form a loop between rolls (59) subjected to an air jet (49) while the feed is controlled by electric sensing means (82), (83) to keep the tension free loop within high and low limits. An imprinter (15) is controlled by an interlock switch (16) momentarily opened after each feeding cycle by a cam (18) and provides registration and verifying markings. Step-by-step feeding to the cutting station is effected by rolls (60) intermittently engaging a segment (175) oscillated by a cam (180) under the control of a solenoid (186) actuated by a switch (197) opened by a cam (196) on the main drive shaft to cause feeding which is stopped when registration markings are sensed by a scanner (39). A severed label is transferred by a drum (189) to a drum (193) which applies it by rotating the article (191).
