Abstract
A process for making piston rings includes the step of winding a steel wire while hot around a former, the steel wire being hardened by the cooling occuring during winding and the material of the wire including 0.3-1.5% carbon, 1-25% chromium, 0.5-4.0% molybdenum, 0.1-2.0% vanadium and the heating, preferably induction heating, being above the AC3 point. The wire may also include 1-5% nickel and/or 1-10% tungsten. Hot square-sectioned wire is wound on a non-circular mandrel and may be quenched by extra oil during winding. The piston gap is cut in the coil and the resultant rings clamped flat for tempering. The rings may be gas nitrided. The flat surfaces are ground flat and external peripheries honed.
