[Also in Division B1] In a method for extracting fluid, such as juice, oil or fat, from fluid bearing material, such as fruit, coconut meat, soya beans, fish, animal meat and cotton seeds, the material is moved along and subjected to pressure in a passageway having fluid flow passages through the wall thereof, and the movement of the material is subjected to a partial and increasing blocking provided by projections directed inwardly from the wall of the passageway which projections progressively increase in number towards the discharge end of the passageway, whereby pressure on the material in the passageway is maintained as the juice &c. is extracted. A press comprises a feeder section 3 and a pressure section 4 having aligned bores 46, 45 providing the passageway and having a hollow conveyer screw 17 with a discontinuous flight 62-70. The feeder section 3 comprises two separable grid body portions made up of arcuate ribs 9, longitudinal flanges 7, and a plurality of longitudinal grid bars 26, 32 separated by spacers 29 to define longitudinal discharge slots P for extracted fruit juice &c., the pressure section 4 being similarly constructed but having its flanges 8 arranged vertically. Fruit &c. introduced through a hopper 6 is fed by the conveyer screw 17 through a reducing diameter section 49 of the feeder section 3 into the uniform bore 45 of the pressure section 4 wherein the grid bars are provided with projections 31 extending inwardly between screw flights 65-70 which projections 31 increase progressively in number towards the discharge end 59 of the press and serve to resist rotation of the conveyed fruit and also to provide increased restriction to the passage of the fruit. Various forms of grid bar and spacers therefor are described in which the spacers 29 may be integral with the grid bar 26 or in which the spacers may comprise balls 82, 83 (Fig. 16) seated in recesses 84 provided in the grid bars 81. The hollow screw shaft 17 is filled with replaceable liquid coolant and includes means such as a rollable rod 76 or balls serving to prevent build up of deposits in the bore 75 of the shaft 17. Means are provided for adjustably anchoring the grid bars together and for securing them together in an assembly to facilitate transport.
