Abstract

1,000,055. Dry cleaning apparatus. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1963 [Aug. 8, 1962], No. 31391/63. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F4] A drying or dry cleaning apparatus comprises a first sequential means to control apparatus for drying articles placed within the rotary drum throughout a first fixed time interval, switch means responsive to a condition of dryness of the articles and operable to terminate the drying operation subsequent to the first fixed time interval, and a second sequential control means for overriding the switch means to limit the duration of the drying operation in case of a malfunction of the switch means. In a dry cleaning apparatus, solvent for a load in a rotary drum 11 in a housing 10 is both drained through a sump 16 and a conduit 17 to a reservoir 28 and evaporated by air from a blower 24<SP>1</SP> which is heated by a heater 19. The solvent vapours are vented to a condenser 23 for separation from the heated air which is recirculated to the drum. The solvent is fed to the drum from the reservoir 28 having a refrigeration coil and pump 33 through a line 18 from which may be taken a portion of the cooled condensed solvent for use in the coils within the condenser 23. Condensed vapour is removed from the condenser through a line 27, water separator 47 and condensate collector 48 for collection in the reservoir 28. A control system is arranged to programme the apparatus through a timed sequence of drying and comprises (a) a first sequential means including a main timer motor having timing cams controlling the heater, blower and condenser for a first fixed time interval; (b) a switch movable between first and second positions dependant upon the flow of condensate in a line 27 from the condenser 23 as sensed by a float in a chamber 48, which switch in the first position energizing the first sequential control means after the first fixed time interval; (c) an electrical circuit including the first sequential control means and the switch in the first position; (d) a by-pass electrical circuit in parallel with the switch, and (e) a second sequential control means for energizing the by-pass circuit after the fixed time interval to override the energization of the first sequential control means in the event of a malfunction of the switch.
