An extensible hasp or hinge fitting for attachment to an expanding case or the like comprises a base plate 1 formed with a toothed rack 6 and two parallel ribs 4, a cover 7 enclosing the rack and providing longitudinal slots 8 along each side and a slot 12 along the top, a member 13, carrying the hasp 14 (or hinge flap) adapted to slide along the cover 7, a pin 15 passing transversely through the slide member 13 and engaging in the side slots 8, a pawl 16 formed with side lugs 17 at one end for engagement in rhomboidal holes 18 in the sides of the slide member 13, a nose 20 for engagement with the teeth of rack 6, and a coil spring 22 surrounding the pin 15 with one arm 23 engaging, the upper surface of the pawl 16 and the other arm 24 passing through the slot 12 in the cover 7 and egaging the under surface of the sliding member 13. When the member 13 is closed about the cover 7 the spring 22 forces the end of the pawl 16 remote from the lugs 17 into contact with the ribs 4 and the nose 20 into engagement with the teeth of rack 6, thus the motion of the member 13 relative to the cover 7 is prevented in one direction, 'but possible in the opposite direction, contracting the case, since the nose 20 is able to slide over the teeth as the pawl 16 pivots about the end in contact with the ribs 4, owing to the lugs 17 being able to rise in the holes 18. When allowed, the spring 22 turns the member 13 about the pin 15 to an angle to the cover 7. The lugs 17 are then lifted by the lower edges of the holes 18 to disengage the nose 20 from the rack 6, thus allowing freedom of motion in either direction.
