Abstract

Slivers of hard fibre such as sisal as delivered by a drawing frame are conducted (as singles or doubles) to a coiling station in guides constituted by enclosed ducts each formed with one, two or three (dependent on the distance the sliver is to be conducted) abrupt changes of direction such as to cause enhanced cohesion between the fibres. Each guide leads to a pair of delivery rollers through which sliver passes downwardly to a rotating nozzle the mouth of which moves in a circular path above a turn-table mounting a sliver can having a diameter at least double that of the path followed by the mouth. A cone-packer, lightly compact and controlling the coiled sliver in each can, is supported from an overhead platform on which the delivery rollers are also mounted. Inaccessible cans, e.g. the central can of the inner of two rows, may be doffed by use of a manual valve-operated, pneumatic ram.
