Abstract

A process for the continuous dyeing of endless filaments or tows of aromatic polyesters comprises applying a dispersion or vat dye to the stretched or unstretched filaments which are then stretched if they are unstretched, dried and allowed to shrink by at least 10%. The dyes may be applied as aqueous dispersions containing 1-50% disperse dye, unreduced vat dye or vat acid which may also contain thickening agents and dispersants. The dyes may be applied by immersion, spraying or padding, dried at 50-80 DEG C and shrunk at a temperature between the m.p. of the filament and 50 DEG C below the m.p. to 10-50% degree of shrinkage. The shrunk filaments may be restretched. Examples of dyeing filaments of polyethylene terephthalate are given.
