Abstract
1,092,364. Carding engines. T. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Oct. 26, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 42085/63. Heading DIN. In order that the doffer and feed members of a carding machine may run at lower than the normal operating speed to facilitate piecing, a change speed gear is interposed in the drive and is arranged to prevent an abrupt change in sliver thickness. The change speed gear consists of an infinitely variable speed unit controlled by a reversible motor that is started when a change of speed is required and stopped when a desired speed has been attained. Speed change may be initiated manually or automatically in response to a signal from a length measuring motion or from a stop motion, and upper and lower speeds are determined by stops mounted relative to a graduated disc and positioned to operate limit switches, Fig. 4 (not shown). The variable speed gear is of the kind in which a V-belt (Fig. 2, not shown), extends between members each consisting of conical half-pulley adjustable towards and away from each other. The adjustment is by pivoted levers connected by sleeves to a screwed shaft with opposed threads and driven by the reversible motor. The input side of the variable speed gear 16 is belt-driven from the taker-in 15, Fig. 1 and the output shaft 40 drives the doffer and burr-crushing arrangements 37. A side shaft 32 from the doffer drive carries the drive to the lap and feed rollers 34, 35 via worm gearing. An electromagnetic clutch and brake unit 23 is interposed between the output shaft 40 and the doffer for transmission of drive when energised. De-energision may be effected by a stop motion which is arranged not only to stop the doffer but to cause the control input of the variable speed gear to move to slow speed position so that on restarting the doffer it will rotate initially at slow speed. The length measuring motion may be caused to operate when a sliver can has been filled and is also arranged to move the variable speed gear to show speed position.
