Abstract

1,091,671. Filling and enrobing bakery products. SPILLERS Ltd. and P. W. R. EGGITT. May 6, 1964 [Feb. 7, 1963; Nov. 22, 1963], Nos. 5103/63 and 46143/63. Heading A2A. [Also in Divisions A4] Bakery products (e.g. cakes and buns) are filled by puncturing a plurality of holes in a surface of each product and injecting the filling through the holes. The filled product may then be enrobed. The filling material may be cream and/or jam; the enrobing material, icing or chocolate. A suitable filling device comprises injection tubes 48 connected to supply chamber 40 to which the filling material is supplied froma filling machine (not shown) by a pneumatically, mechanically or electrically operated piston-type pump 20. The tubes are arranged so that more than one puncture each product to be filled. The injection tubes may have open, closed, straight or pointed ends. With closed ends, the tubes are provided with apertures along their length. The supply chamber may take the form of a circular cavity with tubes extending therefrom. The supply chamber 40 is connected to a source of air or vacuum by pipe 14 so that the injection tubes are purged by a blast of air or vacuum before being removed from a product after the filling has been injected to prevent seepage of filling from the tubes on removal from the product. The steps of filling and purging, may be controlled automatically. The products may be carried on a conveyer through a filling station and then a coating station. At the filling station there is relative movement between the products and the conveyer.
