Abstract

1,090,193. Granulating by extrusion. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. April 7, 1966, No. 15582/66. Heading B5A. An under-liquid extrusion granulating machine has a rotary cutter comprising blades 34 mounted on a sleeve 16, this sleeve being slidably mounted via splines 17, 18 on an extension 11 of drive shaft 10 and urged towards multiorificed die 38 by means of a spring 28, its movement being limited by contact between a plug element 60 and bearing elements 74, 75. In operation, shaft 10 is moved axially to establish contact between these elements and to stress spring 28, the housing 70 of bearing elements 74, 75 being adjusted in position, e.g. by varying the number or size of shims 100, so that the clearance between the die and blades 34 achieves a predetermined value. The rotary cutter blades 34 are brought parallel to the face of die 38 by positional adjustment of shaft 10 and complete face to face contact between elements 60 and 75 is ensured by the shape of element 74 which is slidable in housing 70. Plug element 60 may be of hardened steel and element 75 is faced with or composed of wear-resistant ma. terial such as compacted carbon and graphite powders, tungsten carbide, aluminium oxide, chromium carbide or zirconium oxide, and has off-centre facial grooves (76, 77), Fig. 2 (not shown), which ensure a uniform wiping and clearing action of the bearing faces and facilitate cooling thereof.
