Abstract
In the manufacture of olefine oxides by passing in an olefine adjacent an anode immersed in an electrolyte containing an alkaline halide and conveying the product electrolyte through a diaphragm to the cathode, where the halo-hydain formed in the anolyte is converted to the oxide, the diaphragm consists of a mesh of polyacrylonitrile fibre. The mesh may be spun yarn, staple fibre or other form of the polymer and is preferably shrunk by heating and then swelled in an organic solvent before use. It is mounted in contact with a wire mesh cathode. The anode may be porous graphite or Pt-plated Ti when a ceramic frit is used to admit the olefine to the anolyte which is preferably NaCl or KCl solution. In examples, gaseous mono-defines, i.e. up to butylene or their halogenated derivatives e.g. allyl chloride is injected into a porous graphite anode at 25 1. per hour, and the anolyte fed through the cathode diaphragm at 21. per hour. The electrolyte is 3 to 15% solution of salt. 20% of the olefine is converted into the oxide plus small amounts of other products (specified). Electrolysis conditions are, 3 to 5 V, 20 to 90 DEG C., C.D. 2 to 5 A.S.Dn of electrode surface.
