Abstract

1,089,361. Treating tobacco. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. Jan. 21, 1965 [Jan. 22, 1964; Feb. 11, 1964], Nos. 2793/64 and 5681/64. Heading A2C. A method of processing tobacco for use in the production of cigarettes comprises bringing the moisture content of the tobacco to a value comparable with that of the finished cigarettes, heating the tobacco, cutting the hot tobacco, cooling the cut tobacco and using the cooled tobacco to produce cigarettes. Prepared tobacco 1 is moistened so that it contains 12-14% of moisture at 2 and is metered at 3 to heating means 5, which increases its pliability. The hot tobacco is then cut at 6 and cooled at 7. Stem portions are separated and flattened at 9. The flattened stems may be fed back for mixing with the prepared tobacco to be moistened, or may be fed to a cutter 10 and then mixed with the cut lamina from 7 for feeding to a cigarette making device 11. Instead of heating means 5, a heating and moistening device 13 may be used in which case the tobacco is cooled and dried as indicated at 7A.
