In a swash plate pump having a revolving cylinder block 4 engaging a stationary ported valve face 8 in a drained casing 1, an annular groove 18 is provided in the block face or valve face between the ports and the outer periphery of the face, to prevent entry of air from the casing into the suction side of the pump. Groove 18 is filled by leakage from the delivery side of the pump, an overflow groove 19 leading to the casing interior.
