Abstract
The invention comprises a 21-[(b -ethoxy)n-ethoxy] - acetoxy - 20 - oxo - pregnane wherein n is either 1 or 2 and a process for the preparation thereof in which a 21-hydroxy-20-oxo-steroid of the general formula St-CO-CH2OH (where St represents a steroid nucleus of the pregnane series) is esterified by reaction with an organic acid of the formula CH3-CH2-O-(CH2-CH2-O)n-CH2COOH (wherein n is either 1 or 2) or a functional derivative thereof, to form the corresponding 21-[(b - ethoxy)n - ethoxy] - acetoxy - 20 - oxo-pregnane. The ethoxy acetic acid, or derivative thereof, may be prepared by reaction of the corresponding alkali-metal alcoholate with a mono-halogeno-acetic acid or a salt thereof. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-inflammatory and/or anti-pruriginous activity and containing the above compounds are applied topically to the skin or mucosa.
