Abstract
H2S is removed from gaseous mixtures also containing oxygen and moisture by passing the mixture over active carbon impregnated with iodine whereby the H2S is oxidized to sulphur. The temperature may be between 30 DEG and 120 DEG C. The iodine content of the active carbon may be between 0.1 and 3.0% by weight. The entire carbon may have a B.E.T. surface of 1100 m2/g., a most frequent pore radius of 7 to 8 <\>rA and a grain size between 3 and 4 mm. The process may be performed in two stages over beds of active carbon, the first or both of which may contain the iodine. The active carbon may be impregnated by subliming iodine and allowing the carbon to with a solution of iodine or aqueous potassium iodide. The impregnated active carbon may be regenerated by extraction of the S with CS2. Organic sulphur compounds may be removed from synthetic gas by initial catalytic hydrogenation then oxidizing the H2S by the above process.
