Abstract
Procedure for simultaneously absorbing and oxidizing sulfur-containing gases present in a waste gas stream, where the sulfur-containing gas is hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide or aliphatic thiols and mixtures of the above and the waste gas stream may also contain organic sulfides and thiophenes; characterized by comprising contacting the residual gas stream with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide having a pH greater than 7, at a temperature above the freezing point but below the boiling point of the solution, for a time sufficient to simultaneously absorb and oxidize hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, or aliphatic thiols, or mixtures thereof, alone or with organic sulfides and thiophenes.
