Abstract
An internal combustion engine to be used for producing synthesis gas by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon such as natural gas with oxygen is started on a mixture of the hydrocarbon and air and brought to a desired power output, whereupon oxygen is supplied to the engine in gradually increasing amounts together with an increasing amount of the hydrocarbon while at the same time the amount of air supplied is gradually reduced to zero such that the rate of feeding gases to the engine is substantially constant.
