Abstract

1,086,281. Electric selective signalling. G. VALENSI. Jan. 26, 1965 [Feb. 1, 1964; Feb. 5, 1964; April 7, 1964; April 14, 1964], No. 3447/65. Heading G4H. [Also in Division H4] In an analogue-to-digital converter the input x, Fig. 5, is applied to pairs of diodes d<SP>1</SP>i, di + 1 biased through resistors Ri-ri, Ri and oppositely wound primary coils p<SP>1</SP>i, p<SP>11</SP>i by potentials Vi, Vi+1 provided by tappings of a rheostat Rh supplied by a D.C. source B and separated by a resistance ri. When the applied potential x lies between the values Vi, Vi+1 no current flows in coil p<SP>1</SP>i but a current flows in coil p<SP>11</SP>i inducing an output pulse on a secondary coil Si. A condenser Ci shunted by a resistor pi may be inserted in the input to obtain periodical indications of the output Si determined by the duration of discharge of the condenser Ci. The outputs Si of the converter may be applied to rheostats (rhi, Fig. 6, not shown) with movable contacts positioned to set apart percentages of the voltage corresponding to ordinates of a desired graph (y(t)) applied through condensers (c) to the control electrode of a triode (T). The input may be from a sawtooth or step-form oscillator producing output pulses at regular or irregular predetermined intervals used for controlling an electromechanical device such as an electromagnet controlling a recording head engaging with a moving paper strip. In an alternative embodiment the diodes (d, d<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 11, not shown) are biased by voltages (V(t), V<SP>1</SP>(t)) produced by a relaxation oscillator (G) in sawtooth form and differing from each other by the voltage of a battery (P). This arrangement marks the instant in each period (T) of the oscillator (G) that the input (x) falls within the quantized step determined by the battery (P). The coder may be used in colour television and transmission reception (Figs. 12-16, not shown) (see Division H4) and in telecommunications (Figs. 17-19, not shown).
