Abstract
An adhesive composition comprises a solution in an organic solvent having a boiling point below 75 DEG C. of a copolymer of (1) an ester of acrylic acid with or without an ester of methacrylic acid having the formula <FORM:1086262/C3/1> wherein R1 is H or CH3 and R2 is an alkyl chain of 4 to 12 carbon atoms and (2) an acrylic amine having the general formula <FORM:1086262/C3/2> wherein R1 is H or CH3, X is an integer of 2 to 12, R2 is H or an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbons, R3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, the copolymer having been reacted with an acid so that it is in the salt form and contains 1.0 to 4.0% by weight of the radical -N+-H, the acrylic ester being present in an amount of at least 40% by weight of the non-salt form of the polymer and the methacrylic ester if any not exceeding 25% by weight of said polymer on a non-salt basis and not exceeding one-half of the total amount of monomers (1). The copolymer may also contain on a non-salt basis 10 to 30% by weight of N-tert.-butyl acrylamide. Exemplified ester monomers are 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and butyl acrylate and exemplified amine monomers are dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate and tert.-butyl amino ethyl methacrylate and tert.-butyl amino ethyl methacrylate. The solvent used is ethyl acetate.ALSO:Tapes, e.g. rayon fabric tapes, are at least partly coated with an adhesive composition comprising solution in an organic solvent having a 6 pt. of less than 75 DEG C of a copolymer of an acrylic ester and an acrylic amine which copolymer has been converted to the salt form (see Division C3). The adhesives are said to be water-soluble.
