1293529 Hair sprays S C JOHNSON & SON Inc 21 Jan 1970 [27 Jan 1969] 3041/70 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] Hair spray compositions comprise aqueous solutions of salts of polyampholytes containing a plurality of pendant carboxyl groups and a plurality of pendant carboxylic aminoester groups of formula COOCHR<SP>2</SP>CHR<SP>3</SP>NHR<SP>1</SP> where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are C 1-7 alkyl, optionally substituted, or hydrogen, said polyampholyte having a molecular weight of 10,000 to 200,000. The polyampholyte may be a reaction product of an aziridine compound with a copolymer of an unsaturated acid, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic or crotonic acid or a monoalkyl maleate or itaconate; with one or more "soft" monomers, e.g. C 1-12 alkyl acrylates and higher alkyl methacrylates, and one or more "hard" monomers, e.g. C 1-3 alkyl methacrylates, cyclohexyl acrylate and methacrylate, styrene and acrylonitrile. In Example 38 a hair spray comprises an aqueous alkaline solution of a reaction product of ethylene imine with a methyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, together with zinc acetate and optionally a propellant.
