Abstract

Liquid iron is obtained from ores, particularly those containing phosphorus, by-passing them, together with coal and coke through a rotary kiln in countercurrent to the combustion gases from a cyclone burner, so that the ore is successively dried, pre-heated, reduced and melted. The cyclone burner is provided with a nozzle system through which a gaseous medium is admitted to modify the temperature and/or composition of the gases according to the requirements of the process.
