Abstract
Iron ore is reduced in the presence of a solid carbonaceous material by juxtaposing the reduction product, comprising reduced iron, gangue, and carbonaceous material, in heat transfer relationship with a carbonaceous material containing volatile material to drive off the volatiles and leave a solid char, the volatiles being used to maintain the temperature of reduction and the char to reduce more iron ore. The ore and char may be heated in a rotary kiln furnace and the product discharged into a second rotary furnace containing coal, the volatiles being used to heat the first kiln and the solid discharge being treated to separate the iron from the char which is then used to reduce another charge of ore. The separation of iron from excess char may be performed directly from the first kiln the hot excess char being used to drive the volatiles from the coal.
