Abstract

1,085,167. Auomatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 13, 1966, No. 21299/66. Heading H4R. In a pilot-operated automatic volume control device a D.C. voltage derived from the pilot signal by filtering, rectifying, and amplifying, in units 10 and 11 of the Figure, is applied via control circuit 12, fed also with a reference level at terminal 14, and a switching circuit to control the current flow through a field effect transistor 8, and hence the gain of amplifier 2a. Abnormal variations of the received pilot level are detected by the control circuit 13 and cause opening of the switching circuit comprising the field effect transistor 15 so that the low leakage capacitor 16 remains charged to the value it held immediately before the occurrence of the abnormal pilot level, and the gain of amplifier 2a is therefore held constant. The f.e.t. 8 may, as shown, feed a thermistor 4 connected, via a capacitor 5 to stand off D.C., in the gain con trolling circuit of network 3, alternatively an indirectly heated thermistor may be used in the network 3 with its heater current fed via f.e.t. 8, or the f.e.t. 8 may be connected directly in network 3 so that the gain is controlled by variation of the impedance of f.e.t. 8.
