Abstract

108,311. Electrolytic Zinc Co., (Assignees of Stuart, H. M.). July 26, 1916, [Convention date]. Electrodes.-A soluble anode used in the separation of metals, for instance in zinc refining, is provided with a tight envelope 4 of canvas, duck, or other material pervious to current but not to the slimes, means being provided for maintaining the close fit of the envelope as the anode dissolves. The slimes are thus held in contact with the anode so that all the zinc is dissolved, while dissolution of cadmium &c. is prevented. Portions of the envelope may for this purpose be treated so as to protect the underlying parts of the anode from attack ; for instance, the envelope may be striped with non-conducting paint, or vertical or horizontal laths 6 may be bound against the faces of the covered anode. Collection of the slimes at the bottom of the envelope is thus prevented. At the top the envelope may be tied by loops 5. The anode is cast with lugs 1, resting respectively on a conductor and on an insulator.
