Abstract

A sheet or a surface layer of paper having a thickness of less than 0.004 inch is sized with 0.04-0.5 % of hydrosiloxane containing 0.04-1.7% of silanic hydrogen by impregnation with a liquid mixture containing 0.001-10% of hydro siloxane and curing in the presence as catalyst of a metal soap, amine, alkali metal hydroxide, or ammonia. The catalyst may be incorporated in the paper during manufacture or may be applied to manufactured paper before or after the hydrosiloxane. A number of hydrosiloxanes, including methyl hydrogen siloxane having a viscosity of 15-50 centistokes at 25 DEG C., are specified. The hydrosiloxane may be applied as a solution, emulsion, or dispersion. The liquid diluent may be water, toluene, or mineral spirits. A number of emulsifying agents for an aqueous mixture are specified. The metal soap may be of tin, zinc, zirconium, lead, or iron; dibutyl tin dilaurate an adibutyl tin di-2-ethyl hexoate are specified. The metal soap may be applied as a solution, emulsion, or dispersion and 0.25-19% (calc. as metal) based on organosiloxane may be incorporated. A number of amines, including polyethylene imine, are specified. The amine may be applied in aqueous solution and 1-5% based on organosiloxane may be incorporated. The alkali metal hydroxide may be applied in aqueous solution and 0.1-20% may be incorporated. Ammonia may be applied as a gas or aqueous solution. Sizing of paper containing impurities of wax or the like may be improved by the incorporation of completely or partially water miscible solvents with the hydrosiloxane or catalyst. Solvents specified are n-butanol, acetone, isopropanol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, and 1-ethoxy-2-acetoxy-ethane. Curing may be effected during calendering.
