1,082,821. Cutting and suturing device. NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATEL 'SKY INSTITUTE EXPERIMENTAL' NOI KHIRURGICHESKOI APPARATURY I INSTRUMENTOV. May 3, 1965 [Feb. 1, 1964], No. 4135/64. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B4] A suturing device comprises two jaws, the one 3 carrying a double row of staples, the other 4 providing an abutment against which to bend the staples; means 1, and 2 with 2' for supporting the jaws so that they are parallel but their ends project in opposite directions, which means may be detachably secured together; means which include a slideable wedge 13' for driving the staples against the abutment; and a sliding knife 16 by which tissue situated between the jaws may be cut between the two rows of staples as it is being so sutured. The knife is arranged so that the cut begins after the first pair of staples secured in the tissue and ends short of the last pair so secured. The knife is suitably pivoted to the operating means 13 for propelling the wedge, so as to be swung down into the tissue by engaging a face 17 at the end of a slot 18 in the jaw 3 when the wedge is driven forward by the said means 13. The device may be separated into two halves, for example by releasing a spring clip 9, and the jaws then inserted into opposite ends of, say, two pieces of intestine, after which the jaws are re-connected to each other to be used in the making of an iso-peristaltic side-by-side suture, by movement towards the jaws of the rod 13 by the handle d, thereby driving in the staples and cutting between them with the knife. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 927,936.
