Abstract

1,078,476. Washing machines. PHILCOFORD CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1965 [Oct. 7, 1964], No. 41569/65. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F4] A washing machine having a wobble-type agitator 21 within a perforated drum 16, which is driven at high speed on reversal of electric motor 24 for spin-drying, is provided with a drain pump 27 directly driven by the motor. During washing the pump operates merely to prevent flow out of the tub 17 but for spindrying it discharges through outlet hose 30, an air-vent port 33 has a conduit 34 with an open end 35 to relieve air-locks in the pump produced by "chasing" of the water through unbalanced loads. In a modification the air vent connects with a surge tank and a second tube opening into the tub below the normal water level during washing. Upon initiation of the spin phase some water is discharged by centrifugal force through this tube to the pump.
