Abstract
1,073,231. Heating and cooling appliances; hot-water bottles. SCHOLL MFG. CO. Ltd. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 28, 1962], No. 50989/63. Headings A5R and A5X. [Also in Division B8] Multi-ply bags. A flattened plastics tube folded asymmetrically longitudinally about a line 14 (Fig. 6) is heat sealed along lines 21, 22, 23 to give a bag with an open neck. The initial tube may be formed by welding a sheet, and the weld (41) (Fig. 17, not shown) may be made at the same time as the transverse welds. Several bags are preferably formed simultaneously, as in Fig. 6, to be torn apart at the welds. The welds may be performed by an upper reciprocating die as the material is fed over a flat plate electrode of a high frequency welding press. The same die may be used for several sizes of bag. Tabs (3) (Fig. 7, not shown) between the bags may be provided with holes 25 so that, when the bag is to be used for an ice pack, it may be tied to the patient with a string passing through the holes. If the bag is to be used as a hot water bottle, a covering (36) (Fig. 13, not shown) in imitation chamois or formed from sheet material made of gossamer thin sheets of cellucotton pressed together, may be folded around the folded tube 13 and heat sealed to the bag during its formation. Closing the mouth. After folding the neck about lines (30, 31, 32) (Fig. 8, not shown) it is rolled over onto a piece of double-sided adhesive tape (28), which may have a removable protecting sheet (29). Alternatively a piece of stiffer material (33) (Fig. 10, not shown) may be attached to the neck at (12) and the neck of the bag rolled round this and closed by snap fasteners (34), (35). The fastened strip can then be used as a handle.
