Abstract
Textile materials, e.g. cotton fabrics, are bleached by treating them with an aqueous solution containing alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite and at least one amine having the formula <FORM:1071494/D1-D2/1> in which x is an integer from 2 to 6, y is an integer from 1-5, R is H or -CH3 and Z is -NH2, -NHCH3, -OH or H, and having a pH of at least 8.5, separating them from the bulk of the solution and heating them while in the wet state, preferably at 60 DEG -100 DEG C. The materials may be impregnated with the bleaching solutions, squeezed, rolled up and steamed for 1-4 hours. The solution preferably contains 10-30g/l of the chlorite, e.g. sodium, potassium or calcium chlorite. Specified amines are hexamethylene diamine, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, propylene diamine and dipropylene triamine. The amine may be present in the composition in a concentration of less than 77% based on the weight of the chlorite. The solution may also contain an amine salt which may be added as such or formed in situ by adding to the solution containing the amine an acid, e.g. hydrochloric, formic or acetic acid, in a quantity such that some free amine remains in the solution and the solution has a pH of at least 8.5, optical brightening agents, e.g. stilbene derivatives, wetting agents, e.g. sodium diisobutyl naphthalene sulphonate, and buffers providing a buffer capacity in the range of pH from 3.5 to 6, e.g. potassium hydrogen phthalate and sodium formate.
