Abstract

1,070,872. Polyester filaments. MONSANTO CO. June 22, 1964 [June 25, 1963 (2)], No. 25698/64. Heading B5B. Molecular orientation is imparted to undrawn polyester filaments by impregnating them with an aqueous emulsion of a finishing agent comprising (A) a condensation product of a non- ionic surface-active partial ester, which is a long chain fatty acid partial ester of polyhydric alcohols or their anhydrides, and ethylene oxide; (B) said surface-active partial ester; or (C) a mixture of said partial ester and a non-ionic surface-active polyether, which is a condensation product of a water-insoluble hydroxy fatty acid, the ester of such, or a mixture of acid and ester, with ethylene oxide, and then stretching the impregnated filaments. The aqueous emulsion may contain up to 20% by weight of solids, and 0À1 to 1À5% by weight of solids, based on the weight of filaments, may be deposited thereon by the impregnation. In examples melt-spun filaments of polyethylene terephthalate modified with methoxy polyethylene glycol and pentaerythritol are treated with aqueous emulsions containing 10% solids comprising (1) 60% sorbitan monopalmitate and 40% castor oil condensed with ethylene oxide or (2) sorbitan monolaurate condensed with ethylene oxide. The filaments are then (a) hot drawn 4-41x, or (b) lagged for 7 days and then hot-drawn 4À41x or (c) lagged for 31 days and then hot-drawn 4À41x.
