Abstract

A process for making alloys comprising: C traces up to 0.6% Cr 5 - 40% Mn traces up to 30% Mo traces up to 5% Ni traces up to 20% N 1.3 - 5% up to 1.5% each of Si, Co, Cu, W, V, Ti, Ta or Nb, the balance, if any, being iron, consists of maintaining a melt under nitrogen gas under superatmospheric pressure to raise the N content to 1.3 - 5% and solidifying the melt preferably under superatmospheric pressure. A nitrogen content of 0.7 - 1.0% may be initially introduced by the addition of nitrogen-containing Fe-Cr or Fe-Mn. The alloy may be cold worked.
