Abstract

In a tufting machine in which the file height is varied by a pattern control, the control is synchronised to change the pattern at a predetermined phase of the movement of the needles. The pattern drum P Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) is scanned by photocells which control via amplifiers 59 brakes 50 acting on the yarns. A photocell can only energise its amplifier when the synchronising means, which is connected to all the amplifiers, has been activated. In a preferred embodiment the synchronising pulse is provided by contacts 18 closed by cam 17 rotating with the needle shaft 11. In modifications a light reflecting spot or magnet on the cam energises a photocell or magnetic pick-up respectively.
