Abstract

Contaminated terephthalic acid is purified by recrystallization from a C3- 8 aliphatic ketone, e.g. cyclohexanone at a temperature above the atmospheric b.p. of the mixture and which is at least 150 DEG C., under pressure. The acid may be that obtained by liquid phase oxidation of a p-dialkylbenzene, e.g. xylene.
