Abstract

1,068,730. Producing metal articles; jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. Dec. 31, 1965 [Jan. 5, 1965], No. 55332/65. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Divisions B8, E2 and H2] Apparatus for crimping an electrical connector to a wire and applying an insulating housing to the crimped connector comprises a first station at which the connector is arranged to be crimped to the wire, a second station spaced from the first station and at which the housing is arranged to be applied to the connector and a wire transfer mechanism for transferring the wire when the connector has been crimped thereto at the first station. The apparatus comprises a baseplate 8 mounted on a press platen and a crimping die mounted on a press ram which is movable to and from an anvil 12 on the plate. Connectors 4 are fed one at a time between guides 16, 18 on a block 14 to the anvil 12. A wire 2 is positioned between jaws at one corner of a wire transfer plate 56 so as to lie between the anvil and die. The crimping ram is operated to crimp the connector to the wire, shear the connection between the connectors and by a rod attached to the ram release a latch on a jaw to allow the jaw to close. The ram and the rod are withdrawn and another connector is fed to the anvil. A pneumatic cylinder 110 is operated and on the forward stroke of the rod 108 it rotates a pivoted lever carrying a finger 120 which ejects the wire from the clamp at the next comer of the plate 56 and on the return stroke a pawl 102 engages a tooth 98 on a ratchet plate 96 to index the plate 56 through 90 degrees. An insulating housing 6 is fed by a reciprocating block 30 with guide rails 22 and feed pawls 24, 26 on to the connector on the end of the wire 2. A pneumatic cylinder is actuated to cause a pair of fingers 28 to pivot to grip the housing until the housing is partly over the connector when the fingers are released and the housing is pushed fully on to the connector. A pneumatic cylinder is operated to move the jaw and open the clamp.
